The secret to doing good research is always to be a little underemployed. You waste years by not being able to waste hours.”

In a world where loneliness can be as detrimental to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, simple acts of kindness and connection can make a significant difference. The Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo introduced the "slow lane" checkout, where employees engage customers in friendly conversation, effectively combating isolation among its patrons, particularly the elderly, and proving to be extremely popular. This initiative mirrors findings from the U.S. Surgeon General’s report on loneliness, which highlights the power of social interactions in improving life satisfaction and community well-being. Engaging with those around us—whether it’s chatting with the barista, smiling at a passerby, or fist-bumping a grumpy teen—can foster empathy and enhance our collective happiness. These small gestures cost nothing but offer rich rewards, proving that building connections is a simple yet profound way to enrich our lives and create healthier, more connected communities.

Action!

  • Start making small, meaningful connections with people you encounter in everyday situations—whether it's chatting with the cashier at the grocery store, smiling at a passerby, or engaging in friendly conversation with a neighbor. These simple actions can help reduce loneliness, foster a sense of community, and substantially increase personal happiness.

Sun exposure is a double-edged sword; it is crucial for vitamin D synthesis but also poses risks like skin cancer, sunburn, and premature skin aging. The key to maintaining skin health is balancing these aspects. UVA rays penetrate deeper, leading to photoaging, while UVB rays are essential for vitamin D production and can cause sunburn. Knowing your skin type, the UV index, and geographical location can help determine optimal sun exposure. Excessive UV exposure increases skin cancer risk, making sun protection essential. (Check the original article for deep dive on studies and mechanisms)

Action!

  1. Understand Your Skin Type: Fairer skin types need less sun exposure for vitamin D production and more protection from UV rays.

  2. Use Sunscreen: Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 to 50, especially for prolonged exposure, and apply repeatedly every two hours or after swimming or sweating. (Consider mineral sunscreens to minimize potential risk from chemical absorption, but go with the one you will actually wear regularly)

  3. Monitor UV Index: Check the UV index to adjust your protection level. Use sunscreen when the UV index is 3 or higher, especially for lighter skin types.

  4. Protective Clothing: Wear hats, sunglasses, and UV-repellent clothing with a UPF rating for additional protection when needed.

  5. Practice Safe Sun Exposure: Seek shade during peak UV hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), limit time spent in direct sunlight, and avoid tanning beds.

  6. Regular Skin Checks: Perform monthly self-checks for new or changing moles using the ABCDE method (Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, Evolution) and visit a dermatologist annually for professional skin exams, especially if you have risk factors like fair skin, family history, or frequent sunburns.

Expertise and wisdom are about knowing what's most important at any moment, even in complex environments, and this "expert intuition" can be accelerated. Cognitive Flexibility Theory (CFT) is key in developing this intuition, as rigid mental models fail in the face of new information. Expertise thrives in "ill-structured" domains like medicine, business, and investing, where intuition outperforms rigid algorithms. Wisdom correlates with openness rather than age or intelligence, suggesting that anyone can cultivate it with the right mindset. Real-world examples, like veteran engineers and investors using intuitive insights, illustrate the profound impact of expertise and real-world experience over formal knowledge. Intuitive experts often can't articulate their process, as seen in racehorse trainer Franck Mourier, whose expertise deteriorated when analyzed. The goal is to ask the right questions, notice subtle details, and adapt swiftly, embodying the nuanced and often inexplicable nature of true expertise.

Action!

  1. Read Case Studies: Seek out and read case studies in your domain to build a diverse database of examples (rather than trying to extract general principles), which will help you make better decisions by reasoning through analogies. Focus on understanding both the surprising similarities and dissimilarities between cases. While reading, practice maintaining an adaptive worldview, using these examples to stay open to new insights and approaches.

  2. Seek Safe Failure & Play Games: Use simulations and games to experience "safe failure," which helps you rapidly update and refine your understanding of complex, real-world domains and develop the ability to think from diverse perspectives. Instead of rigidly adhering to existing models, adopt an "adaptive worldview" that adjusts your mental models to fit new information. Embrace the opportunity to fail over sixty times to compress the learning process and develop an adaptive worldview.

  3. Cultivate Emotional Granularity: Improve your emotional intelligence by practicing emotional granularity, which involves identifying and labeling the wide range of emotions you experience. This practice helps you better interpret intuitive signals from your unconscious mind and strengthens your connection to your accumulated expertise. Use tools like emotion charts to enhance your self-expression and understanding, allowing you to navigate the world more effectively and connect more deeply with your experiences.

FUN FACT

Most ginger cats are male. There are roughly three ginger male cats to one ginger female. This is because the ginger gene is found on the X chromosome, meaning female cats would require two copies of the gene to become ginger whilst males only need one.
